Members of the global jubilee movement this week met the Pope and senior Cardinals.
Representatives of the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (Afrodad), the Caribbean Debt Network, the European Network on Debt and Development (Eurodad) and Jubilee USA attended a Mass with Pope Francis, and met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Cardinal Peter Turkson, head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
The meetings with Cardinals Parolin and Turkson discussed debt burdens and cancellation, tax avoidance by corporations and the need for financial reform.
Eric LeCompte from Jubilee USA said:
“Pope Francis is challenging the policies that keep people poor. He is an important ally in efforts to stop austerity policies and to encourage corporations to pay their taxes.”
