Responding to today’s Ofgem announcement that the force-fitting of pre-pay energy meters can resume under a new voluntary code of conduct, Heidi Chow, Executive Director of Debt Justice said:
This is an absurd decision from a toothless regulator. Every household with a pre-payment meter instantly becomes vulnerable because they can be cut off from the basic energy they need.
There is also a stony silence on tackling the £1.1 billion of energy debt already weighing down people with pre-payment meters.
One pre-pay meter is one too many. It’s time for politicians to write off unaffordable energy debt and end this two-tier energy system that has caused so much harm.
